My compost bucket wasn’t picked up on my usual day. What do I do?
Our drivers are human, and weather is weather. If we haven’t yet contacted you about a delay on your route, let us know by phone, text or email. Someone will be out to get your bucket as soon as possible.
My bucket was picked up but I didn’t get an empty bucket in return. What do I do?
Again, let us know and we will bring a replacement. Sometimes our buckets blow away in the wind; sometimes folks pass by and decide they need a free bucket (Our buckets are nice!). If this happens to you repeatedly, we can arrange to fetch your bucket from a less visible outdoor location.
Your Facebook page mentions “compost church.” What is that?
Every Sunday from noon to 2 p.m., our volunteers gather at our site near the University of Louisville campus, 240 East Bloom Street. That’s when we make our magic by turning the compost with pitchforks and hauling materials from one step in the process to the next. It’s a good workout and a fun hang. Just show up whenever you like.
What else could I do to help out?
From time to time, we need people to fill in for some of our regular route drivers. If you are interested in being covered by our insurance as a substitute volunteer driver, let us know.
As a member of the co-op, how do I request compost for my own use?
Give us a call, or text or email, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Bear in mind that our high-quality compost is in demand, and availability depends on where we are in the cycle. Some folks come to our site and help themselves from the compost pile, but this isn’t a great idea: Compost that is not yet fully “cooked” can actually be harmful to plants. So check with us first.
I don’t have that much food waste. Can I pay less and have my bucket picked up once a month?
Unfortunately, our system depends on regular weekly routes, which cost us the same to drive whether you leave out a bucket or not. If you don’t, that’s OK; we’ll catch you next time.
Do you offer vacation holds?
Yes. If you will be gone for more than a few weeks, call us and we will tell you how to use the interface with our billing provider to take yourself off the list and rejoin when you’re back in town.
I’m ready to take this a step further. Can you help me start my own backyard compost practice?
Yes, we are happy to talk you through it and make suggestions. On-site composting and soil enrichment is the most efficient method, and encouraging your sustainability efforts is part of our mission.
